Before Clancy Brothers there were John McCormick and Bing Crosby.. .that is where a lot of the Irish American repertoire came from.  Many older Irish songs did not cross the seas with immigration, due to trauma, poverty, language, discrimination etc.  But there is a cluster of songs that we sang back when and are now often disrespected.  Oh they don't sing that in Ireland, here's a real Irish song. We are called Plastic Paddies etc.  Not nice.  Let's sing them anyway.  They were mostly sung on St. Patrick's day.  If they were good enough for my grandparents, they are good enough for me.
