Gerard McDonnell (1971-2008) was a beloved member of the Alaska Irish Music Community here who lost his life while coming to the aid of other injured climbers on K2 in August 2008. Ger's musical abilities were well respected both in the Alaskan Community and back in Ireland.
He encouraged young people to participate in Irish music and dance as well as promoting those arts in Alaska. Gerard was born in Ireland but considered Alaska his home away from home. To honor Gerard’s contributions and remember his special place in the Alaska Irish music community, the Irish Club of Alaska created the GERARD MCDONNELL MEMORIAL AWARD, which is presented each year to a young individual selected from the applications sent to the Board of Directors of the Irish Club of Alaska (ICA). The award trophy and plaque were contributed to ICA by Gerard's family from Ireland. The Trophy and Plaque are currently on display in McGinley's.
Membership for the Irish Club of Alaska is $20 for an Individual or Family.
An applicant for the Gerard McDonnell Memorial Award should be a person under 25 years of age who participates in and contributes to the Irish Music/Dance/ Culture and Community of Alaska and is a member of Irish Club of Alaska.

The Time Has Come Ger McDonnell His Life and His Death on K2
Damien O'Brien (Ger's brother-in-law) has just let us know that he has "finally finished writing the Biography of our friend Ger McDonnell". The book will be available on Amazon and will be published in the States in September. The book will be available in Ireland on the 30th of April, you can read more here at Collins Press, the Irish Publisher.
